See the menu of support Get in touchThe Common Core's Grade 7 statistics and probability standards (7.SP) are among the most conceptually demanding in the middle school curriculum — and among the least supported by existing instructional materials. Many teachers feel underprepared, and students miss out on the reasoning skills that statistics uniquely develops.

Dr. Jennifer McNally is a Professor of Mathematics at Curry College in Milton, MA, where she has taught for over 15 years. Her work centers on inclusive statistics instruction — creating learning environments where all students can engage deeply with statistical thinking.
She is the Principal Investigator of DISCUS-IS (Discourse to Improve Students' Conceptual Understanding of Statistics in Inclusive Settings), an NSF-funded research project exploring how to make statistics instruction more equitable and effective. That's Weird! grew out of that work — an attempt to meet students where they are and honor what they already know.
