Statistics education works best when students notice something genuinely surprising about the world — and want to explain it. Every page of this book is designed to create that moment.

— Dr. Jennifer McNally, statistics education researcher and author

Built for how students actually learn statistics.

Inquiry-first design

Students encounter genuine statistical puzzles before receiving instruction — building the cognitive need for each concept before it's taught.

Fully illustrated

Visual, engaging, and accessible — designed for the full range of learners in a heterogeneous classroom, not just strong readers.

Standalone or supplemental

Works as the centerpiece of your 7.SP unit or as a high-engagement supplement to your existing curriculum.

Research-grounded

Written by a statistics education researcher. Grounded in how students actually build statistical understanding — not just procedural fluency.

Dr. Jennifer McNally
Statistics Education Researcher & Author

Dr. McNally is a faculty member in higher education whose research focuses on instructional practices for teaching introductory statistics, with a particular interest in supporting neurodivergent learners in heterogeneous classrooms through Universal Design for Learning principles. She is a Principal Investigator on an NSF-funded grant studying statistics instruction. That's Weird! grew directly from her research on how students develop genuine statistical thinking — and what instructional conditions make that possible.

Everything you need to know.

Is this actually appropriate for middle schoolers? It's described as a picture book.

The illustrated format is intentional — research shows visual, inquiry-based texts are more accessible for a wider range of learners, including middle schoolers. The statistical content and cognitive demand are firmly at the Grade 7 level. Many teachers describe it as "a picture book that thinks like a textbook." The illustrations support conceptual understanding; they don't simplify it.

What's in the Educators' Guide?

Lesson frameworks aligned to CCSS 7.SP standards, discussion prompts for each section of the book, differentiation strategies for heterogeneous classrooms, and guidance on integrating the book into your existing curriculum — whether you use it as a standalone unit or alongside your current materials.

Does this replace my curriculum or supplement it?

Either. It's designed to work as the core instructional text for your 7.SP unit, or as a high-engagement supplement alongside any existing curriculum. The Educators' Guide includes notes for both approaches so you can fit it into whatever structure you're working with.
